Official Thread for the 4th Ashes Test - ENGLAND v Australia, Trent Bridge
|
England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Adam Lyth, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Steven Finn
Such has been the weakness of Australia's middle order that a switch to six specialist batsmen, with Shaun Marsh replacing his brother Mitchell, is one option that could be considered. Alternatively, he could replace Adam Voges, enabling Western Australia's brothers to team up in Tests for only the second time.
Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Chris Rogers, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Shaun Marsh, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Peter Nevill (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon
Pitch and conditions Alastair Cook has predicted "another Edgbaston" and if so it will continue the transformation from the attritional pitches of recent vintage. Trent Bridge dare not risk a boring surface, having been marked "poor" a year ago by the ICC for a slow, low surface for a Test against India in which only 29 wickets fell. The weather is also unsettled enough to fill both bowling attacks with optimism.

That's right Mr Burns. Faulkner suspended due to his DRINK DRIVING and Finch seems to have had all sorts of injuries. Will be interested to see Pattinson, Starc, Cummins & Coulter-Nile with Johnson and Hazlewood rested.

Lyon is the leading off spinning Test wicket taker of all time for Australia. Agar is 21 and learning the game. He took 5 wickets for Australia A against India the other day but will have to do a lot more to come into contention along with the leg spinners Cameron Boyce and James Muirhead.
Presume one of them will be in the squad for the October Tests in Bangladesh though.
I think for now they see Agar as the new Xavier Doherty in ODI cricket. Except he can bat and is great in the field.

The Aussie side in 2006 was remarkably similar to the one in 2005. Indeed, it was probably the fact they'd lost the previous series that made Warne, McGrath, Langer, Martyn carry on 18 months more. So, not sure about your wholesale changes argument.

They've chopped Trent bridge and Cardiff sven son.
Would hope by then that we aren't such a conditions based side, but it's still a ludicrous decision

Eerie, Like I said, more a case of them being utter shit than us being unbeatable, I do think think we have a good core of bowlers though, that and Joe Root has been a revelation

Team Down Under will be along the lines of:
Cook(c) Lees Root Bell Hain Bairstow(wk) Stokes Woakes Broad Finn Crane
Ali, Buttler, Leaning/Taylor, Anderson (or Wood/Harris if Anderson has retired) and C.Overton in the squad.
All subject to injury, health and fitness. Biggest prospects are Dunn and J.Overton who can obviously crank it up to 90mph+ and will immediately be considered if they stay fit.

Let's not get carried away here, England weren't THAT good, more the case of Australia being very bad, oh and they have a habit of bouncing back from a bad series in the sense that they have nearly always been not afraid to make wholesale changes

Think some people got carried away following an innocent comment by Bayliss but every team that wins a series usually has talk of dominating into the next millennium. From Australias point of view the only positive is that we are now out of this period of back to back series and its late 2017 before the next one. A period where they need to urgently find batsmen. I agree with Ponting , I don't think its quite as bad as made out but a few need to seize the chance.
